Title:You Got Me Trippin’ Over You

Description: EBLAMC podcast #28 finds the curators in one of their trippier moods. It’s no secret that the gang will lean towards music to put you in a trance and I defy you to not reach for the glow sticks and pacifiers during the Sia/Pink Floyd excursion early on. A prime example of how you can rely on EBLAMC to bridge musical eras seamlessly. I also encourage you to grab a shovel and dig deep into the Midival Punditz track offered here. Equally cool cranked as you tool down the freeway, or when the mind is spinning late at night…or early AM. And podcast 28 features one of the all time favorite EBLAMC tracks with Stoned by Lewis Taylor. After 70 minutes of brain twisters, the fellas at EBLAMC sooth your soul with Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah. So thoughtful. (John I.)

EBLAMC Podcast cover 88

Any mix with “Anarchy In the UK” is worth listening to in my opinion. David Byrne recently referred to The Sex Pistols as “a species of comedy”. He meant it in a good way but also said “they couldn’t play.” Perhaps it is the difference between British punk and American funk. Accordingly, this mix is a bag of American rock nuggets and British pop gems. We also have a dusting of house, dance, and crazy mash-ups to enjoy. (Brad)

Oasis – Don’t Go Away
Dawn Penn – You Don’t Love Me (No,No,No)
Andrien Below – Beat Box Guitar
Scissor Sisters – Take Your Mama
Visqueen – Broken Stars Can Still Shine
Ry Cooder – Soy Luz Y Sombra
Bloc Party – Blue Light (Engineers Anit-Gravity Mix)
Elvis Costello – Pump It Up
Giant Sand – Trickle Down System
Pixies – Wave Of Mutilation
Sex Pistols – Anarchy In The U.K.
Ridgewalkers ft. El – Find (Andy Moor Remix)
Basement Jaxx – Magnificent Romeo
Groove Armada – Easy
The Knitters – Long Chain On
2 Many DJ’s – Skeelo vs Eye Of The Tiger
The Velvet Underground – I’ll Be Your Mirror
The Locust – Master And Servant
Freak Rock – ACDC Vs. Missy Elliott
Minus The Bear – The Game Needed Me

Podcast Title:  The EBLAMC Beat Goes On
Podcast Description:  Early on in EBLAMC podcast # 24, Dumptruck are “Going Nowhere” and then Hot Hot Heat are in the middle of it?  Makes you think.  It also features two romps sung by French chanteuses Brigitte Bardot and Nouvelle Vague.  Obviously, the word chanteuse translated into English means steamy sex kitten.  Speaking of which, does anyone know what Jem is doing these days and if so, give her my number?  That is a girl that likes to please (seriously, Google the lyrics to that one).  And what would an EBLAMC podcast be without the dusting off of a classic B-side.  In this installment, one is reminded of a time and place when Stevie Wonder ruled the world.  As Sonny and Cher via Giant Sand would opine…The Beat Goes On. (John I.)
Track Listing:
1. Interpol – Slow Hands
2. Giant Sand – The Beat Goes On
3. Jem – Come On Closer
4. Dumptruck – Going Nowhere
5. Hot Hot Heat – Middle Of Nowhere

Podcast Title:  A View to a Chill

Podcast Description:   It’s funny how these EBLAMC podcasts turn out sometimes…it seems the mind of the collective will unify to put together a disc of songs that seem of a particular time and place.  To this listener, I’m clicking play on podcast #22 in the late afternoon after a day of scooter riding around a beach town in the south of France.  A time to relax and have a glass or three of some local wine, yet am still feeling a bit play full and anticipating the good times to come later that evening.   Am so chilled out that I can’t tell if my flip-flops are on, or if they have fallen by the wayside…and don’t give a damn either way.  Have secured a table in the perfect spot to watch the setting suns display of colors, just ordered up a lovely selection of appetizers, and the EBLAMC crew are gathered around.  Won’t you join us?

Podcast Title:  Something about post-punk electronic music for old men

Podcast Description:  Death Cab for Cutie kicks off this release with a happy sounding song that I hope is not a commentary on the members of EBLAMC, followed by post-punk Thelonious Monster and the obligatory song in French. In these Enz times, the brothers Finn reunite. Now let’s go to some fun and exciting Egyptian-Spanish fusion, fun and poppy Scissor Sisters, jungle-dance from Brit electronica band M.I.A., NYC electronic from Si*Sé (nice song!), Dutch electronic from Arling Cameron (not to be confused with Daft Punk), and Brit-NYC electronica from Interpol (despite their post-punk labeling). Not sure how DC-based Barcelona muscled out Seattle-based Barcelona to make an appearance. X-Press 2 soothes with David Byrne’s vocals. Let’s just close out this podcast to ask Prefab Sprout who built the clocks. (Mike H.)

Podcast Title:  Hen freakin’ hao

Podcast Description:  Podcast 20 kicks off with a burner and just does not let up.  Must say that there are bands on here that haven’t proved to have a lot of legs, but for a brief period in the early Aughts, their flame burned bright and some of their finest work is captured here.  What happened to you Jet, Franz and YYY’s?  As usual, we dig deep for some classic deep cuts from INXS, Prince and David Byrne, and this ‘cast contains the all-time highest rated EBLAMC track from the Sneaker Pimps…another lost soul.  Not sure if I’d dial up these particular zeros and ones for an intimate dinner party, but it does make a perfect companion for a road trip, BBQ or group sing-a-long in the shower. Podcast Title:  Asswhippin’

Podcast Description:  I grew up in an era where Top 40 radio was King ,and had to wait until my sister came home from college in the summer to hear something  cutting edge…still remember her dropping the needle on Outlandos d’Amour and blowing my 12 year-old mind.  Now I watch my own 12 year-old with limitless access to music from all of time and wonder what will become his Roxanne.  In an effort to help him separate the wheat from the chaff and help him find a cool path in his music life, am gonna be playing EBLAMC podcast# 19 for him (subliminally of course, who likes what Dad likes?) for the next couple of weeks cause it has so many awesome artists playing some really interesting songs.  No question that #19 is a highlight in the EBLAMC oeuvre, and one that is a primer to cool.  (John I.)

“How can you govern a country which has 246 varieties of cheese?” ― Charles de Gaulle

From grunge to funk, brie to Velveeta, EBLAMC volume 18 displays a remarkable diversity of frommage, intermingled with some queso and Käse. But don’t miss the meatier cuts from Modest Mouse, Miss Kitten, and the sweet treats from The Concretes and The Rulers…This selection includes music spanning five decades, two continents from the old world to the ex-colonies, so don’t be surprised by a remarkable degree of variety in style and substance.  Enjoy! Wishy Washy Wishing Musicians of Walla Walla Washington

Long before the leader of these Irish rats proposed applying a bandaid to the world’s problems, he was breaking ground with the early punk song, Mary of the 4th Form. Next: mosh with Mexicans.  One word, twice: Numa. Does anyone know why Faron Young was the subject of a song by an English pop band? ELO brings fond memories of my youth (thanks to you, Scott Kirklin). Prickly pixies perform politely while the angel Gabriel escapes the small town and makes it big time. Only 17 podcasts into EBLAMC existence and here we feature Wilco for the fourth time, naively wishing for a perfect score. And apparently Mr. Weller is wishing for a Jam reunion. Danger Mouse manages a unique take on the Beatles. I’ve never really noticed before the surf music influences in Sonic Youth – see if you notice, too, right after hearing non-surfing shadowy Canadian men strum their guitars. This podcast finishes up with a number of songs that were hits at one time or another in one country or another: they are easy on the ears and certainly worth a listen. (Mike H.)

We begin the podcast with the cultural emigrant Morrissey, who has left for America with his “Irish Blood, English Heart”.  America swoons.  The ghost of the band America arises via The Thorns.  The soul-cat of techno Miss Kittin visits from France (twice).  Thelonious Monster joins us for a “Sammy Hagar Weekend” road trip. There is plenty of nighttime driving music in this mix, as well as some musical detours. Notably, we drive with windows rolled down through Elliott Bay to hear the fermented-jazz smell of teen spirit. (Brad M.)

“Drinkin’ Coca-Cola”

Podcast #13 is just like drinking Coca-Cola.  Sure…your left brain knows that it’s full of sugar and probably not good for ya.  But on a hot summer’s day, it hits your right brain with a Big Rock Candy 2×4.  It’s some Sweet Soul Music that will Make You Happy and put you into Sweet Surrender.  Truly an Aural Exciter that will make you scream, I Want More.  Then…Wash Your Brain with a hit of South California Purples and you’ll be tellin’ the EBLAMC Boys that “I Love Your Way”.  Podcast 13 definitely requires that you Take A Long Look. (John I.)

“The Amazing Technicolor Turntable”

This podcast opens like a flickering neon broken heart. A soundtrack mixed from a turntable plugged into a lamp post.  Never have Public Enemy, Elvis Presley (Junkie XL), and Scritti Politti sounded so appropriate together. Madonna gets reconstructed by a Freelance Hellraiser. The Smiths are reduced to fluttering specs of technology. Aretha Franklin says a little prayer as we take off on a sunset journey through Villiers Terrace, a Gay Bar, and end up in Fat City. (Brad M.)

Elliott Bay Leisure And Music Club Podcast #11

Elliott Bay Leisure And Music Club Podcast 11

“Pop Has Freed Us”

Upbeat podcast despite the fact that most of the bands featured were creatures of the nineties. Brian Eno claims this shoegazing band named after a Roxy Music song is “the best of English pop music.” Can you guess?

Loved “Waterboy” by Imperial Teen – perhaps a significant influence for Arctic Monkeys. Go with Queens of the Stone Age to hear an award-winning song. Catch the Brit-sounding world punk band Firewater sing a farewell to Superman.

Instrumental drum ‘n’ bass from Cinematic Orchestra is a nice break from some of the more driving songs that start this podcast off. Shoegazers return with Argentinian Latino rock band Soda Stereo.

Who can’t love Susannah McCorkle’s bossa nova piece, “The Waters of March”? While Infinite Buddha was definitely finite, El Yucateco lives on.

One band that may be infinite, Gang of Four, appears with a song that will remain frozen in time, remembered for once being banned by the BBC. Bryan Ferry does Bob Dylan. A 12-year old Compton boy does Electronica with Seelenluft.

The Motown-influenced Jet song “Are You Going To Be My Girl” sounds like this band started at least 30 years too late. And for you alt-country fans, watch out for the firecracker Ryan Adams tosses out at the end. (Notes by EBLAMC member Mike H.)

“Should An Earth Mother Wear A Bra?”

Oh Podcast #10…you were one of THOSE.  Most noteworthy is the only appearance of opera in EBLAMC history.  Hmmmm…  It’s OK, it’ll be over soon enough and you can get back into the groove of some awesome indie, deep-cut classic, and trancey electronic music that is the core of the EBLAMC podcast.  Not sure you’ll hit repeat, but you will be forever changed.  I Don’t Like You and I Won’t Pretend To”

The opening words on this podcast really are ones to live by. The number 8 is the number of money in many Asian cultures and podcast 8 is total money. Highlights? Lots of ’em…classic deeeeep cut Elton John, Madonna’s brother-in-law Joe Henry is smooth as always, and the Polyphonic Spree sound like…well…a polyphonic spree. Stick around for the last four songs as they will, in turn, fire you up, make you happy, put you into a groovy mood, and take you on a journey of the mind. And you get the EBLAMC gold star if you can identify where track 13 comes from (without cheating and looking it up on your iPad). A hint…perhaps the best freeway-cruising-in-a-van-made-of-weed song EVER! (John I.)

“Oyster Perpetual Movement”

Some of the most unforgettable male vocalists of the modern era–pearls in the raw Kushi oyster–but don’t hesitate before you swallow the oyster raw and whole. Get past the shell to the briny meat concealing a gritty filling of tragicomedy. Joe Strummer is gone, but The Clash will never be forgotten.   Post-punk college radio darlings The Pixies brought Frank Black’s sardonic snarl and whine to the front of the stage. Nick Cave’s “Your Funeral, My Trial” is just the tip of the iceberg from one of the greatest albums of the late 20th century. Watch Wings of Desire. And don’t forget to thank the angels for Tom Waits’ vocal chords.

Let’s spend the afterlife in the space lounge of 2001: A Space Odyssey sipping a Rheingau Auslese and listening offhandedly to Kraftwerk. Don’t forget  the frisson at hearing Alison Goldfrapp’s voice for the first time–a breath of fresh air blowing down from Felt Mountain. All this gravity is too much…  so there’s Ween, Stereolab, and some wicked absurdism from The Moog Cookbook. Enjoy your repast! (Geof H.)
