For the past few years, I’ve been asked to nominate articles from magazines, websites/blogs and fanzines for what is called the Best Music Writing series. The series editor is Daphne Carr, who wrote the wonderful volume in the 33 1/3 series on Nine Inch Nails’ Pretty Hate Machine. (She’s also edited some other sweet books, like a recent anthology by feminist/early rock critic Ellen Willis.) The annual book publication used to be published by Da Capo, but has gone DIY in the new economy.
Academics who write about music get picked on for “dancing about architecture,” which actually sounds like a really fun thing to me. I’d sure as shit dance about architecture, especially when I’m drunk. Also, I like to read about records — like Kelly O at The Stranger, who wrote this fabulous piece about her life as a Slayer discography (yes, I nominated it for BMW).
